The Crew
We keep our footprint small. Depending on the scope of the production there will be either a one-man-band (one person with all of the equipment) or a 2-3 person crew conducting most or all of the production. We prefer to hire (and train if needed) local people to assist us, translate, drive and conduct location scouting. This allows us to transfer a skill, provide income and allow the local population to learn about film making. All who participate whether as an intern or paid position will be included in the credits.
Trust Building
Our cameras do not surface until our crew has established a bond of trust with the local population and the volunteers. Our team prefers to embed within the local population for the duration of filming. This allows us to learn the nuances about the culture that are important to the story. Sometimes trust building takes a few days, other times it takes weeks. Obviously, there are instances when it is culturally inappropriate and or space is unavailable for us to do so. When this occurs, we will embed with volunteers or at lodging approved by partners.

Story Telling Approach
Once trust has been established with the local population, the cinematographer will slowly introduce camera equipment. Our policy is to shoot in a non-intrusive manner. We follow strict National Press Photographer Association ethics guidelines. No staging, scripting, prompting of any kind is allowed. We anticipate and follow action as it happens. Occasionally, we miss photo opportunities because of our methods, but it works best for us. Our cinematographer uses natural lighting (and darkness) as a rule, however on rare occasions, we will utilize a small LED light if necessary. Interviews are usually impromptu but we must, at times conduct "sit down" interviews. Most importantly, we treat everyone with dignity and respect, and do not sensationalize hardships or sensitive information.
